Me and My Son Are Best Friends

solange-and-julez

Seeing Solange and her son had me thinking about my relationship with my mother.  They seem so close; partly because of the era and her age, but it has me thinking is this boy too grown acting? Granted we only get glimpses of their relationship splashed across the blogs and magazines but this is no normal toddler. My mother and I are close, we share stories about our lives and experiences and I’m fortunate to able to learn from her mistakes, but there is a clear distention between who is the child and who is the parent.  I don’t get that from these two.

Lil’ Daniel is pimped for propaganda and globe-trotted from location to location; does he know his ABC’s? Can he
read?  In our current society lots of importances is placed on friendship verses parenting and its something that should be discussed.  With kids killing kids, doing drugs, robbing and the like, if mommy and daddy were parenting instead of socializing things may be different.

Friendship can reign superior. But in any real friendship you hope someone would steer you from danger and wrong doing. The same should be tru in the parent-as-friend relationship. The parent must still retain the respect and authority necessary for the relationship to work, but also, the parent must give the child some respect. That is an element that is often missing from the dictator type parenting style. If one can balance this then not much will go wrong. My father is/was my best friend. But I knew if I did badly in school, I was getting my azz beat regardless of him being my homie.
